Please watch the full episode of Fox 11 Los Angeles “The Issue Is: with Elex Michaelson,”with a special interview with Brian Wallace and Sandra Abrevaya, co-founders of the nonprofit organization I AM ALS. The story was also previewed on the Fox 11 News.
Brian Wallach’s life changed when he was diagnosed with ALS at just 37 in 2017. He and his wife, Sandra Abrevaya, used their political skills from the Obama White House to begin advocating for the cause. They’ve lobbied the federal government to allocate $1 billion in funding for ALS research and make it easier for patients to access experimental treatments.
After reading about Brian and Sandra in Politico, Katie Couric connected with them and became one of the executive producers. She says Brian and Sandra reminded her of the power of the individual to change the world.
Their story is the subject of a new documentary on Amazon Prime called “For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign.”
Please take a moment to watch the closing commentary, with Elex’s heartfelt, personal reflections about some of the many people with ALS he interviewed over the past 14 years, including Ady Barkan, Nanci Ryder, and Mari Winsor, in collaboration with the ALS Network.
The ALS Network is grateful to Elex for our longstanding partnership and his many personal efforts to raise awareness and support of our ALS community. We celebrate the work of Brian, Sandra, and Katie in the creation of this moving chronicle of living with ALS and their #nevergiveup spirit in action
