The ALS Network celebrates Dwight Clark Day with the San Francisco 49ers
Since 2017, the San Francisco 49ers have annually honored NFL legend Dwight Clark, who wore jersey number 87, to recognize his contributions both on and off the field. Clark, a beloved wide receiver, is most famous for “The Catch,” a remarkable play in a game against the Dallas Cowboys, where quarterback Joe Montana threw a pass to the back of the end zone, and Clark made a fingertip catch, sending the 49ers to their first Super Bowl. Clark was instrumental in all five of the team’s Super Bowl victories, winning two as a player and contributing to three more as the team’s General Manager.
In May 2017, Dwight Clark announced he had been diagnosed with ALS, and he passed away from the disease on June 4, 2018. Since his passing, the 49ers have honored his legacy through their annual “87 Day,” also known as “Dwight Clark Day,” held every August 7 in tribute to his jersey number.
The 49ers celebrated “Dwight Clark Day” another year at the 49ers Camp Community Corner. As the team concluded their final day of open practices, the 49ers organization paid tribute to the legendary Dwight Clark while raising awareness for those affected by ALS and supporting their families.
Numerous 49ers alumni attended the team’s final open practice to celebrate “87 Day,” including Jesse Sapolu, Steve Bono, Dwaine Board, Toi Cook, Brent Jones, and Bryant Young. Additionally, the 49ers coaching staff, front office members, and fans wore t-shirts and hats featuring Clark’s retired jersey number “87” to honor his life and legacy.
As part of the team’s celebration, the 49ers welcomed ambassadors from two ALS organizations – ALS Network and Augie’s Quest – as honorary guests. San Francisco 49ers General Manager and NFL alumnus John Lynch; Chief Executive Officer Jed York; and NFL alumnus and former teammate of Dwight Clark, Brent Jones, gave heartfelt remarks about Dwight, his legacy, and expressed their gratitude to everyone present.
It was a special day for our ALS community as we joined together to celebrate Dwight’s legacy and continue our collaboration to raise awareness and drive the discovery of prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS.
All of us at the ALS Network are grateful to the 49ers for their continued dedication to advocate and support those affected by ALS and their families.
