Born and raised in Fresno, CA, Maya Bunch grew up in a large family full of love and energy. Her parents raised six children, including Maya, her four sisters, and her brother. In high school, Maya was active in basketball, track, and helped with pictures and the youth camp at her church.
In 2021, Maya was involved in an accident which left her with a broken foot. After being in a cast for several months, her foot healed, but the muscles in her leg stopped functioning completely. For almost a year, Maya was on crutches before opting to use a wheelchair.

In December 2022, she was admitted to a hospital to try and determine a diagnosis, which ultimately did not succeed. At this time, Maya, a senior at Bullard High School, was forced to do homeschooling and missed many senior year memories. Her dreams to celebrate her educational accomplishments and walk across the stage with her friends at graduation drove her and her family to continue seeking answers.
In 2023, Maya and her family proudly celebrated Maya’s graduation from high school, a significant milestone that showcased her unwavering spirit and determination. However, just a few months later at the age of 18, doctors diagnosed Maya with ALS. The diagnosis came as a shock for the Bunch family, transforming their lives.
At that time, doctors said she had four to six months to live, but now, in April 2026, she is still fighting and mentally aware. Maya is currently completely paraplegic, receives critical ICU care at the Stanford Hospital, and uses a tracheotomy to breathe. She is unable to eat, and is dependent on a feeding tube for nutrition. Maya’s family communicates by asking yes or no questions and Maya responds by moving one finger one time for yes and twice for no.
In July 2025, Maya coauthored a book with Heather White, MSW, from Stanford, sharing her journey with ALS. Despite the difficult circumstances, Maya’s story is deeply hopeful, highlighting the strength she finds through the support of family, friends, and her faith community.
“The physical challenges she faces each day are daunting, but her strength remains an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for keeping Maya in your thoughts and for your continued love and support. Together, we can help her navigate this journey and ensure she receives the care she deserves.”
