The ALS Network proudly announces the 22nd annual Inland Empire Walk & Roll to Cure ALS (formerly Walk to Defeat ALS) on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at Miller Park in Fontana. This annual event brings incredible energy and an  outpouring of support for those affected by ALS throughout California and Hawaii. Participants are invited to join other members of the community in honor or in memory of those impacted by ALS for a family-friendly morning of celebration, exercise, education, awareness, music, food, and kids’ fun.

Since its inception in 2003, the Inland Empire Walk & Roll to Cure ALS has been a yearly opportunity for the ALS community to connect and fuel the search for effective treatments and cures for ALS. The Inland Empire Walk will be held at Miller Park (17004 Arrow Blvd, Fontana, CA 92335). Proceeds from the Inland Empire Walk & Roll event will be used to support California programs and services for the ALS community, help enact life-improving legislation, as well as fund critical research throughout the world.

“We walk so that others know they are not alone. We smile so others know it will be ok. This is not a fun disease; it turns your life upside down and makes extreme life changes,” said Lisa Fjeldsted, co-captain of Hearts for ALS, who lost her husband to ALS in 2019.

“With the support of the ALS Network and those who are willing to show up, we are making a difference. It might not always be the difference we want. But through these community outreach events, you know that you will always have the support of others who have gone through or are currently going through these trying times. What it can do and has done for my family is create lifelong friendships which have become family. One step at a time, and together, we are making a difference.”

Free online registration closes Saturday, October 19, at 9:30 a.m; however, supporters are welcome to register at no charge on the morning of the event once check-in opens at 9:30 a.m. This special community event is open to the public with the walk and roll starting at approximately 10:00 a.m. Designed to appeal to every level of walker and supporter of the ALS Network, registrants can also participate virtually from anywhere in the world and view a livestream of activities from the startline and stage. All funds raised support the urgent mission priorities of the ALS Network related to care services, public policy, and research.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. People with ALS lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and, eventually, to breathe – all while their minds and senses usually continue to function. People who have served in any branch of the military are diagnosed with ALS nearly twice as often as the general population. Currently, there are no known cures for ALS and only modestly effective treatments.

The mission of the ALS Network is to partner with the ALS community as we drive the discovery of prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS; provide access to quality care and connection; and promote initiatives to improve health outcomes. The ALS Network, formerly ALS Golden West, serves people with ALS and their families throughout California and Hawaii.
