Volunteer Appreciation Month
Celebrating Generosity and Service to Our ALS Community
Volunteers provide help and hope to people living with ALS and their loved ones in so many ways, including participating in our community outreach events and raising much-needed funds; advocating for legislation by sending emails, making phone calls; and posting on social media to help raise ALS awareness and support for our organization.
Throughout this month, we will be sharing our gratitude for many of the ALS Network’s dedicated volunteers. Thank you to all of our volunteers for their incredible support of our mission and families facing ALS. Follow in their footsteps by signing up to be a volunteer today!
Giving Their Time and Talents: Honoring Our Event Volunteers
The ALS Network could not do what we do without our dedicated event volunteers and committee members. We appreciate their ongoing support to help fuel our mission. Learn more about why they spearhead these events and continue to volunteer year after year.
"This will be my 22nd year of participation in the Napa Ride Walk and Roll to Cure ALS. My first year was as a participant, I joined the ride committee my second year and have been a member ever since including two years as co-chair. I continue to volunteer because our mission has not been achieved, finding better treatments and eventually a cure for this devastating disease."
- John Grcina, Napa Valley Ride, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS committee member
"ALS is a very important cause for me. My dad passed away from ALS so I know the struggles families go through in dealing with this disease. I volunteer as a way to support others going through those struggles and hopefully provide some comfort for them in a difficult time. I love the ALS community and the way they help those in need."
- Melanie Baker, Hawaii Walk & Roll to Cure ALS volunteer
“Sometimes, the smallest things make the biggest difference – a tool someone didn't know existed, an errand that gets run, a household project that finally gets done. Those things may seem small from the outside, but to a caregiver running on empty, they can feel like everything. I hope I can provide a little relief to someone who needs it.”
- Carson Lee, ALS Days of Service and East Bay Walk & Roll to Cure ALS volunteer
“Volunteering with the ALS Network, to me, means showing up for people in a way I wish my family and I had when my father was living with ALS. I know how isolating and overwhelming this disease can be, and how difficult it is to navigate it without enough answers or support.
That’s why this work matters to me. I’ve seen the heart behind what the ALS Network does and how they show up for people in real, tangible ways. Being part of that means coming together to use our voices to push for the research, support, and resources families need.
Most importantly, it means making a promise: we are here, you will not go through this alone, and we are not giving up on you.“
- Dulce Quintanilla, Champions for Cures and Care and Los Angeles Walk & Roll to Cure ALS volunteer
The Power of Youth Leadership in Action: Student-led Jim Tracy 5K, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS Co-Chairs
"The ALS Network has been an incredible partner in organizing the Jim Tracy 5K, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS. The event continues to honor the legacy Jim left in the running community and brings everyone together each May, and we’re grateful to be a part of something so special." - Sophia Nichol and Finn Smit, Jim Tracy 5K, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS Co-Chairs
The 12th annual Jim Tracy 5K, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS is on Sunday, May 3 in Golden Gate Park. Since its inception, this student-led, community event, held in memory of beloved San Francisco University High School coach, Jim Tracy, has grown exponentially with each year.
Raise Awareness and Inspire Action

Volunteering comes in many forms, and by using your voice, you can help bring awareness, support research, and encourage others to take action. We invite you to share your ALS story to help raise awareness and inspire others to get involved.
