The ALS Network commends Congress for passing the bipartisan Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Bill which includes important provisions to improve accessibility in air travel. These changes come after years of work by ALS advocates nationwide to highlight the struggles they face when traveling, particularly those who use wheelchairs.
On Thursday, May 16, 2024, President Biden signed the bill into law.
This legislation includes changes that people with ALS, caregivers, and other air travel passengers with disabilities have advocated for, including a much-needed study into safe and secure in-cabin wheelchair tie-down systems, new training requirements for assisting passengers with mobility issues, improving the complaint process at the Department of Transportation (DOT), better access to seating accommodations, and improved access to airline websites, applications, and other communications.
The FAA Reauthorization Bill is evidence of the progress that is possible when advocates unite for a common purpose. The ALS Network is committed to working with allies in government, the disability community, as well as partners in the medical community, to improve access in all areas of our society.
