The 2026 Running Bitcoin Challenge took place from January 10 through January 31, uniting the global Bitcoin and fitness communities for an inspiring virtual, do-it-yourself event. Now in its fifth year, this year’s Challenge was proudly supported by presenting sponsors The Human Rights Foundation and Block.

The Running Bitcoin Challenge honors Hal Finney’s enduring love of both running and Bitcoin while raising critical funds and awareness for ALS, the disease that claimed his life. Through this event, participants help advance the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS.
Since 2021, Hal’s wife, Fran Finney, has carried forward his legacy by leading the challenge in his memory. Participants are invited to run, walk, hike, or roll a total of 21.1 kilometers (13.1 miles), Hal’s favorite distance, either all at once or cumulatively throughout the month. What began as a tribute has grown into a powerful global movement, fueled by the passion and generosity of the Bitcoin community.
This year, more than 88 participants and 12 teams from around the world joined the effort. Together, they have raised over $61,000 toward the $75,000 fundraising goal. Proceeds from the event directly benefit the ALS Network’s Hal Finney ALS/MND Research Fund, supporting vital research initiatives related to ALS and other motor neuron diseases.
In 2026, the Challenge is also expanding its international footprint, with Run for Hal events to be held in Nevada, Texas, Norway, Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and beyond – further demonstrating the worldwide impact of this growing community.

While the official Challenge dates have passed, the mission continues. Thank you to everyone who helped carry Hal’s legacy across the finish line. Participants can still join from anywhere in the world, with donations and registrations remaining open throughout the year at runningbitcoin.us.
